Weapons: Close Quarters Industries, Manufacturers

While talking to some of the regulars at Gatman Gunsmith & Co., they told me of a most peculiar weapon manufacturer based out of Hemlock City known as Close Quarters Industries, or “CQ Ind.” for short. Upon further investigation, the Archives tell me of their duality, crafting weapons and Entry Tools of a clandestine nature that serve equal purpose to both the Hemlock Police Department and the notorious Made Men of Midland. Their reliable instruments bear the mark of close-range combat and lock-breaching precision. Therein lies the conundrum, a bridge between those that patrol the streets upholding the law, and those who circumnavigate it using darkened alleyways and access tunnels beneath.

Established in 192 A.H. when Hemlock became the social hub of all of Midland… parties, gossip, music, art. There was a tremendous amount of criminal activity growing within the city, so government and law enforcement needed assistance in breaching buildings to conduct raids. Rumor has it that the company was formed by one of the criminal organizations vying for power at the time. After near-total decimation at the hands of a brutal ambush by the Made Men of Midland, they left the blood and bullets behind, and entered into a new form of war — one of enterprise and diplomacy. Unknowingly, the Made Men of Midland and the Hemlock Police Department both entered into a deal with the newly founded corporation, CQ Ind., and now both rely heavily on their supply. The Made Men of Midland may have won the battle, but CQ is now profiting off their war.

In the eight decades since their founding, Close Quarters Industries has amassed an extensive catalogue of armaments, tools, and munitions, that are manufactured in both Hemlock City and Loren’s Gate, then distributed throughout every region of Midland. Even Strap Gatman carries a handful of CQ wares in his humble yet eclectic stock. When Strap heard I was with the TSP, he so kindly granted me access to examine these weapons. I’ll record brief description of each…

Knuckle Dusters

During my intrepid journey through these realms, I chanced upon a weapon that is common on Earth: the Knuckle Dusters, wrought by the skilled hands of CQ Industries. These formidable brass knuckles, had earned a fearsome reputation for their relentless impact on Earth's inhabitants, rendering significant damage and even maiming the target. Yet, here on Bantam, I encountered a populace endowed with an extraordinary physical resilience, rendering the Knuckle Dusters merely as a "brawler's back-up plan” to pack a slightly larger punch, and to protect the wielder’s hands. However, resourceful individuals soon unraveled another facet of these weapons, one that showcased their adaptability – that of lock breaching. This stands as a testament to the inventive spirit kindled by adversity, a narrative of weapons transcending their original purpose to serve an unforeseen and invaluable function.

The Irons

The Irons, a product of Close Quarter Industries (CQ Ind.), garners its nickname due to its rugged reputation as tools of strenuous labor, consisting of a small hatchet, a crowbar, and a mechanics hammer. These common tools, each celebrated for their extraordinary utility and durability, were packaged and repurposed by CQ Industries as weapons and Entry Tools. The Irons have found new life in dismantling locks and obstructions with remarkable ease, becoming the preferred breaching kit for both law enforcement, Soldiers, and criminals alike. Hemlock P.D. Detectives, Midland Army Team Leaders, and Made Men Repossessors, all typically carry a set of The Irons wrapped in a waxed canvas carrying case.

Serenity

Serenity, a product of Close Quarters Industries (CQ Ind.), is an awe-inspiring melee weapon, capable of instilling dread even in the most resolute Bantam Citizens. This butterfly-style blade, while ironically named, derives its reputation from its unsettling presence, designed to enable agile, noiseless maneuvers for adept practitioners of stealth. Mastering the art of this unique weapon requires a natural inclination for stealth and a deep understanding of its simple, yet ingenious mechanics. Operating with two handles connected by a pivot, skilled users can swiftly and silently extend the blade for precise strikes to vital spots, a mesmerizing yet deadly ballet. The Serenity derived its name from three aspects of its application. Firstly, a flawless strike to vital areas can subdue even the mightiest inhabitants of Bantam, bestowing upon them peace and serenity. Despite Bantam's creatures being highly resistant to physical force, extreme sharpness remains a substantial threat. Secondly, the name alludes to the unusually calm demeanor often exhibited by its users. Those who prefer this weapon are usually the solitary, focused individuals amidst frantic crowds, finding tranquility in any circumstance. Lastly, peace can be found in walking away from conflict, and this weapon enables a swift and silent strike, then sly movement away from the target. Or in some cases, movement towards the target, THEN the strike.

The Adjudicator

The Adjudicator, a revered revolver by Close Quarters Industries (CQ Ind.), is a favorite firearm on the wild frontier. Chambered in .357 Magnum round, its accuracy is a testament to the quality craftsmanship of CQ Ind. Known as "The Judge, Jury, and Executioner", it's a popular dispute-settling tool. The Adjudicator symbolizes justice, resolving countless disputes swiftly and decisively. Its iconic look, exceptional functionality, and ease of care secure its esteemed position in frontier society. Within close to medium range, you can easily get a shot off with this iron. At long distance, Agile users can place an accurate shot with one eye shut and proper trigger squeeze. Some individuals are confused as to why CQ makes this firearm, even though it cannot open locks. It is because wheel guns can fire while concealed inside the pocket of a overcoat or duster without snagging fabric, like a semi-automatic would.

Master Key

The Master Key, a legendary short-barreled shotgun by Close Quarters Industries (CQ Ind.), delivers devastating firepower at close range. Its 12-gauge slug makes it formidable, while its uncanny ability to dismantle and destroy locks earns it the "Master Key" title. The specialized nature of this firearm stirs suspicion around CQ Ind.'s potential association with the criminal underworld. Its distinct design, lack of iron sights, engravings, and shorter barrel hint at its intended use in densely populated areas of Hemlock, with narrow alleyways and quarters. It allows for easy concealment under a long coat, less barrel poke when clearing around corners, and devastating damage, albeit a bit inaccurate. It’s difficult to wield this weapon with maximum efficacy unless the user is inclined to sneak. Also, its special Entry Tool ability is even more effective than most common weapons, increasing the chances of a successful breach. While there's no concrete evidence, the Master Key is often associated with tales of Hemlock's Made Men silently infiltrating buildings and dispatching targets with expert precision. If one can afford this costly boom-stick, it is advisable to carry it discreetly, as its design intends.

As evening descended over Gatman Gunsmith & Co., I reflected on the complex web woven by Close Quarters Industries. In a world where lawful and lawless blur, CQ Ind. stands as a testament to the complexity of power, influence, and survival, mirroring the evolving landscape of Hemlock City. As I pack my notes to delve deeper into Midland's shadows, I can't help but ponder the intricate dynamics at play.
